03 Jul 2015 Bagel Store Tuna Salad
Ever wonder how the bagel store makes their tuna fish salad, and why the one you make at home looks nothing, tastes nothing, and smells nothing like theirs!? To the point where my kids won’t eat homemade tunafish, but love it from the bagel store. Considering the cost of bagel store tuna salad (never mind the calories…), I wanted to duplicate theirs in my own kitchen.
Just last week, on Erev Shabos Kodesh, a friend shared her recipe with me. I tweaked it just a bit, and the results were astonishing! Homemade tunafish that really, truly tasted like I bought it in the Bagel Store! The kids ate it and enjoyed it. To quote one of my boys, “Mommy, the tuna isn’t good; it’s amazing!”
When I thanked my friend for sharing her recipe, she replied, “Glad to hear. Now go give yourself 20 bucks.” Thanks to my friend, I am happy to share this easy and delicious recipe with you.
BAGEL STORE STYLE TUNA SALAD – לכבוד שבת קודש
In the bowl of the food processor, fitted with the “S” blade, chop together:
1/2 of a red onion (cut into chunks), 1 stalk celery (cut into chunks), 1 medium carrot (peeled and cut into chunks). Chop vegetables in the food processor using several on-off pulses until they are a small dice, but not until they are mushy. Transfer chopped vegetables to a large parve bowl. Set aside.
Into the bowl of the food processor, add 2 cans of solid white tuna, drained. Add a few heaping tablespoons low fat mayonnaise. Pulse with several on-off pulses, until the tuna is finely minced and very smooth. You may need to add more mayonnaise. Once the tuna is smooth, transfer the tunafish to the bowl with the diced vegetables. Add in 2-3 Tbsp. flavored bread crumbs, dash mustard powder, and dash garlic powder. Mix all together with a spatula or spoon.
Serve in a sandwich, with crackers, or as a salad topper. Enjoy your homemade Bagel Store Style tunafish – בתיאבון! And now go give yourself 20 bucks 🙂
Wishing you all a wonderful Shabos,
Michal
